Dev Blog 13 – (almost) finished the cockpit!

If you follow the development, you probably noticed that I haven’t posted many pictures of the cockpit until now. The reason is obvious: it wasn’t ready yet. In this blog post I want to share with you why it took so long and give you further insight on the research and development process for this aircraft. When researching an aircraft, we need as many drawings, photographs and documents as we can get our greedy hands on. The development process of any add-on is accompanied with countless hours of digging through […]

Dev Blog 12 – Devils and Details

Ever heard of the 80-20 rule? It’s a concept I first heard about in my engineering courses, but it’s applicable to many, many fields. In our particular case it states that when reaching a 80% completion of a project, the remaining 20% require 80% of the work. The more I think I’m “almost finished”, the longer the remaining work takes. I’ve been riveting the Boeing 247D for WEEKS. Admittedly, one reason why it takes so long is the fact that I tend to procrastinate when things become too tedious. The […]

The all-new website!

It was time for an update. The design of the old website goes back to when we started in 2017. While I really liked the vintage look and feel of it, the underlying technology was getting old. I originally wanted to update the website before the release of the Blériot XI, but I couldn’t find the time to do so and finally decided to wait for a time after release. But then bad things started to happen only a few weeks ago. I had customers reporting that they weren’t able […]

Dev Blog 11 – Riveting (an) aircraft

Work on the Boeing 247 keeps progressing. The 3D model is in its final stages, so shortly I’ll be able to move on to the next stage when the coding is done. One thing I found incredibly tedious is placing the rivets and panel lines of the aircraft. 3D objects in MSFS make heavy use of a new material type called “decal”. It is used to draw a high-detail object on top of lower-detail geometry. For aircraft, this technology can be used to draw high-resolution rivet heads on top of […]

Winding down 2020

Winding down 2020 As the “year of doom” slowly winds down, it is time to reflect on the past few months and give some outlook of what’s to come in 2021. No matter how discouraging and difficult 2020 has been for most of us, the flightsim community truly has reason to celebrate. With the advent of Microsoft Flight Simulator, we witnessed an incredible jump in available technology that will keep our shared Hobby up-to-date for many years to come. Despite its flaws, the new sim certainly raised the bar of […]

Presenting: The Wing42 Blériot XI

The Wing42 Blériot XI There’s been a slight change of plans that took shape over the past couple of weeks. Due to some technical issues regarding the Lockheed Vega for MSFS, another project of mine became the center of attention and is now only hours away from completion. I started working on a Blériot XI all the way back in …. I can’t even tell how long ago – but it’s been years. It was a project I worked on on the side and for FSX back in the days. […]

Wing42 for MSFS

Ladies and Gentlemen, It’s time for us to have a little chat about our plans for the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator. Initially, I was very skeptical when Microsoft announced their comeback to the flight simulator world back in June 2019. This skepticism was based on the bad experience we had with the failed Flight and Microsoft’s subsequent and complete withdrawal from the market. As I am writing this, all of my initial negativity is utterly blown away and before we get into the actual topic of this blog post, I […]

Dev Blog 10 – server upgrades

Goooooooood evening! It’s been way too long since I posted here and so many things have happened in the meantime. So where should we start?! Server issues A couple of days ago, we had some issues with the database, which holds the data for the online shop as well as the forum. After some back and forth and careful consideration, we decided to restore a backup of the database from a few days prior to the issues. As a result there might be some forum entries missing right now, but […]

Dev Blog 9 – Audio Crisis

As you all know, sound is a primary key to creating an immersive experience. The Wing42 Lockheed Vega 5 is still lacking this level of immersion and it has always been one of my sore spots. By-passing my to-do list for the next version, I sat down and put some serious time into the development of our own sound engine. In this article I want to outline the various pitfalls of this round of development and also what you can expect in terms of sound. First of let me clarify […]
